Opening Reception of the "Mois de la Francophonie" 

at the Willard InterContinental Hotel 

During the Opening Reception for the 9th annual “Mois de la Francophonie” on Thursday, February 26, at the Willard InterContinental Hotel, the first “Grand Prix de la Francophonie” was presented to Senator Mary L. Landrieu (D-La.).

A second award, the “Prix Special de la Francophonie”, was presented to Ms. Claudia Bezaka, Director of World Languages for the DC Public Schools. Both awards were given by the Ambassador of Madagascar, H.E.Mr. Jocelyn Radifera. Also, a Certificate of Recognition was given to Mr. John Lath Akadje, for his long years of involvement in the Francophonie.

The Opening Reception traditionally launches the “Mois de la Francophonie”, which brings the entire Francophonie world together in Washington, D.C. This month–long cultural celebration — which includes international films, concerts, seminars, children’s programs, and the always eagerly anticipated Grande Fête — is organized by the Francophonie Committee in partnership with the Smithsonian Associates.
